MERIWA Minerals Research Advisory Committee - Call for Nominations

14/05/10

Background

The Minerals and Energy Research Institute of Western Australia (MERIWA) is a statutory body established by the Western Australian Government Minerals and Energy Research Act 1987, to encourage development of the minerals and energy industries within the State. MERIWA fosters and promotes all aspects of minerals and fossil-fuel energy research, principally by contributing funding for worthwhile research projects, and co-ordinating industry sponsorship.

The Minerals Research Advisory Committee (MRAC) is appointed to advise the MERIWA Board on research project grant applications. The MRAC has eight members representing research or industry organisations active in Western Australia, and six additional members appointed by the Minister for Mines and Petroleum because of their knowledge of, or interest in, minerals and energy research.

MERIWA is calling for nominations for MRAC from CME member companies and is seeking to appoint both a ‘Full Member’ and ‘Deputy’ to the Committee.

  • Full Member applicants – ideally able to represent the Pilbara iron ore industry, be Perth based and have mining or processing experience
  • Deputy Member applicants – ideally able to represent the nickel or mineral sands industry, be Perth based and have mining or processing experience

Role

MRAC Members and Deputies are mainly required for their technical expertise as the principal task of members is to assist in the assessment and approval (or otherwise) of various applications received by MERIWA. Depending on which of the various MRAC sub-committees the member is appointed, they may be required to assess one or two research applications per year. It is unlikely that any one of the sub-committees would be asked to assess more than three applications per year.

Sub-committee meetings are arranged at the members’ convenience and last for approximately two hours. Some personal time will be required to review applications before the meetings.

Deputies are normally only required to attend full MRAC meetings if the Full Member is unavailable. However, Deputies are invited to participate in sub-committee work based on their technical expertise.

Conditions

Nominations for MRAC will be considered by the Hon Norman Moore MLC, Minister for Mines and Petroleum, and approved under the MERIWA Act.

Appointments to MRAC are for three years and commence on the 1st of July each year. CME members would be appointed sooner and participate on a temporary basis until their term becomes official from July 2010.

Membership of MRAC is on a voluntary basis with no payment.
