Reduce and Renew Seminar

Friday, 23 September 2011

Seminar overview

The Reduce and Renew Seminar will showcase the efforts industry has made, and is continuing to make to reduce its carbon footprint and incorporate renewable energy into the daily operations as part of a best practice and good business initiative.

The Seminar will feature case studies from a range of speakers from industry, including the Department of Mines and Petroleum, St Barbara Limited, Chevron Australia and Alcoa of Australia.

A panel of experts will then take to the stage for a dynamic discussion about the opportunities and challenges associated with incorporating renewable energy into energy systems. Panel members include Verve Energy, University of Western Australia’s Geothermal Centre of Excellence, Carnegie Wave Energy, Barrick Gold, Horizon Power and Western Power. The discussion will be facilitated by Matthew Bowen, Partner at commercial law firm Jackson McDonald, who has extensive experience in the energy sector.

Who should attend?

• Those operating in the resource sector interested in viewing best practice examples of reducing carbon footprint and incorporating renewable energy.

• Anyone wishing to broaden their understanding of the way the resource sector operates, and what initiatives are being undertaken to reduce the impact on the surrounding environment.

Chevron’s Climate Change Initiatives
Speaker: John Torkington, Senior Advisor, Climate Change Policy

John Torkington will outline Chevron’s global actions to reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency. The presentation will focus on the research and demonstration of new technologies in areas such as greenhouse gas storage, hydrogen, solar thermal and bio fuels. A brief overview of the Gorgon Carbon Dioxide Injection Project in Western Australia will be provided.

9.40am

Collie Hub – Carbon Capture and Storage Initiative
Speaker:Ian Briggs, General Manager of Environment at the Department of Mines and Petroleum

The Collie Hub project, located in the South West of Western Australia is developing a unique example of an integrated CO2 supply and utilisation chain. The project will showcase CO2 transport, storage and utilization in several distinct facilities and applications. The common aim for all project participants is proving at an industrial scale that CO2 capture, transport, storage and utilisation can benefit from common infrastructure.

The Collie Hub project being facilitated by the Western Australian Department of Mines and Petroleum was chosen as a National Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Flagship project in June 2011.

The project aims to integrate the users and emitters of CO2 within one network. Presently the hub has the membership of several large companies such as Perdaman Chemicals and Fertilisers, Verve Energy, Griffin Energy, Wesfarmers Premier Coal, BHP Billiton Worsley Alumina and Alcoa of Australia.
The presentation by Ian Briggs, the General Manager Environment from the Department of Mines and Petroleum, will provide an overview of the project and the geology of the region that gives rise to this unique opportunity.

What is Alcoa doing about Climate Change?
Speaker: David Cooling, Global Refining Residue Technical Manager for Alcoa

Alumina refineries produce large volumes of alkaline residue which require long-term storage. Alcoa has developed innovative technology that reduces the residue’s alkalinity by mixing it with carbon dioxide. This produces a significant greenhouse benefit by locking the CO2 up in the residue. Alcoa has established the world’s first Residue Carbon Capture plant at its Kwinana refinery, locking up almost 70,000 tonnes of CO2 a year. This project has established a new world benchmark for residue treatment in the alumina industry.

St Barbara’s Sustainability and Reduction in Carbon Footprint
Speaker: Jeff Waddington, Manager, Environment & Community

St Barbara Limited is a mid-tier gold mining producer and mineral explorer operating mines in the Leonora and Southern Cross regions. St Barbara is committed to reducing the environmental footprint of its operations and conducts its activities in an environmentally sustainable manner. The presentation will focus on the efforts undertaking to reduce the operation’s carbon footprint through a refurbishment of the mining camp which has resulted in increased energy and water efficiency as well as education of the employees and contractors working on site.
